Granny Square Day

On Instagram, August 15th has been declared Granny Square Day by @suregal27.
Crocheters are encouraged to post a traditional granny square with the hashtag #grannysquareday2017 so these are the squares I made to celebrate the day.

Last night a very good friend of my husband's came to visit and showed me this hoodie/poncho that his mom just gave to him for his newborn son.  She told him it was his when he was little and is at least 40 years old now.
He doesn't remember wearing it at all, but it's certainly a wonderful thing that his mom saved it and a lovely gesture that he shared it with me.

When his son was born a few weeks ago, I sent them several presents ... a blanket, teddy bear, and gift bag with soap and washcloth .. all crocheted.  He called to thank me and said his youngest daughters, after seeing everything, really wanted to come see me for a crochet lesson.
Of course, I enjoy sharing my love of crochet.  Zain will be 7 years old next month so I set her up with a big hook and chunky yarn and had her chaining away in no time.  She kept going, and going, and going, until she had a very long chain to take home.
In the meantime, I had shown 12 year old Ghina one of my granny square baby blankets so she asked if I could teach her how to make a granny square.  She had taken an after school crochet class a couple of years ago and still remembered the stitches, so it took her no time at all to whip up a 3 round granny.

Happy Granny Square Day!
Happy Tuesday!

It's so good to teach the children crafts of all kinds. I like your colour combinations for the 3 granny squares.

Your grannies look so cheerful, Tammy. Happy Granny Square Day! It's great that you teach those girls how to crochet. They will have a lot of fun crocheting all kinds of things in the future.

Teaching "handmade" skills is so much fun - I wonder if those girls will be coming back and showing you things they've made, or patterns they'd like to try with a little help from their kind teacher :)

I love your crocheted things, Tammy. I still have the pot holder and coaster as a cover for my dollhouse bed and for a small dollhouse rug! So darling. The girls must have been so thrilled to learn. You are amazing. Susan

Tammy, I think you are wonderful the way you share your skills with others and especially the young ones that will remember you for the rest or their life. Like all of us who knit and crochet.. we remember the one special person who took the time to teach us. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

I think it's wonderful when children show an interest. Not many of them want to learn. I learned as a child from my mother. It stuck with me all these years. Granny square day, I had no idea. I'm always out of the loop.

Happy granny square day Tammy! I couldn't join up - sadly...
You have many interested students and it must be fun teaching them. I cannot teach my daughter to crochet to save my life. She isn't cut for it. On the other hand my niece cannot wait to have a crochet session with me :) I guess that compensates it.

Always great fun to hop around on your pages! :)
Wish I could crochet too. I sent three years in
school trying. Time wasted. LOL

Trying to pull myself together here. Doing
some soul-chrocheting...

Tammy - sorry for the delay in commenting on your blog. My Mom and one of my sisters have been visiting and it hasn't left much time for blogging. Anyway, I did show them your post and they got a real kick out of seeing the granny squares. They are both crocheters, and they said they could not begin to count how many squares they have done over the years. Thanks for passing on this great craft to others!

Your blog is called "Tammy's Daily Treasures" and I say that you are one of those treasures to be so lovely to teach the youngsters your crafts. It truly is a gift to be given those skills at a young age when it is easier to learn. They will definitely appreciate it, today, tomorrow and well into the future.
